Perhaps your neighborhood is not as bad as some of the others, and window guards may be a little overkill. Or maybe you just don't like the idea of living behind bars. Either way, what are some practical things you can do right now to increase your homes window security?Lets face it...a secluded easliy accessable window makes an easy target for a burglar. Well there are 2 basic things that can be done to increase the windows security: 1) Installing Pins & checking for simple window maintenance 2) Upgrading the glass to a "protective" safety glass Lets take these one at a time. How To Protect Double Hung Windows:Perhaps this the type of window you have at home. It is the most popular window for new construction.Here is a simple way to increase your doublehung windows security... Take a drill and drill a hole into the top of the bottom window & simultaneously through &into the bottom of the upper window. Now take a 16 penny nail, and insert through both holes. Now no one can open the window from the outside. (Be sure to check your window warrantee first before doing this , so you do not void its warranty) How To Protect Casement Windows:Check all hardware to make sure it is working properly...especially the latch. If any of the equipment seems to be loose or wobble...do not hesitate to replace it.Most importantly don't forget to install your security system window stickers! How To Protect Sliding Windows:Simply take an old broom handle & cut it to size to lay it in the tracks. Then srew a few screws in the upper track so the window can slide easily...but not be lifted up & off of the track!.How To Use Protective Safety Glass To Increase Window SecurityWired Glass: This kind of glass they often use in schools. Imagine a thin wire mesh running in between the glass. It serves 2 purposes. First it is a visble deterrant & second, in case of broken window it prevents glass from flying everywhere. Laminated Glass: Imagine a glass sandwich with a peice of plastic in the middle! It is manufactured by permanently bonding two or more lites of glass with layers of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer, under heat and pressure, to create a single construction. Tempered Glass: Tempered or toughened glass is made by heating glass to 1200 degrees & then rapidly cooling it. This technique creates a state of high compression in the outer surfaces of the glass. As a result, the bending strength is usually increased four or five times that of normal window glass. When broken, the toughened glass fractures into small pieces. with no sharp edges. Plastics: Plastics care classified as either acrylic or polycarbonate. The acrylics or plexiglass are more than ten times stronger than glass of the same thickness. Polycarbonate s are even stronger...up to 20 times more than plexiglass. The down side of these is that that they can scratch easily. There you have it. we have given you several suggestions to improve your windows security. How many will you put into action? If you are not the type of person to take on projects like this, then ask a local handyman for help. As an absolute minimum thing to do....don't forget to put window stickers on to advertize your security system!
