"Adding Smoke Detectors And Heat Detectors To Protect Your Home From Fire and Smoke"As discussed in our last article by adding a smoke detector to your existing security system you can add extra protection to your home and family from smoke and fire damage. And if you ask me, you can never have enough help in this department. Where To Install Smoke DetectorsA good rule of thumb to go by is to install a low voltage smoke alarm next to your existing 110 volt battery back up smoke detectors that you have already.Inspectors usually require a 110 volt smokie within 10 ft of every bedroom or sleeping dwelling. Your home may be older and not coincide with this ruling. So I would recommend putting one within this proximity...especially if you do not have any standard smoke alarm there already. The magic phrase to shoot for is "Within 10 ft of a bedroom door". ***Money Saving Tip***
Sometimes one
smoke alarm can be strategically placed within a hallway to protect 2
or more bedrooms!Do you have an attic or basement? Consider placing a smoke detector here as well. Where To Not Place A Smoke DetctorAvoid placing a smoke detector next to the kitchen where someone may burn the toast! Can you imagine the fire department showing up everytime your children burn toast? What a waste of tax payer dollars that would be, not to mention how many lives could be lost from real fires. Now you can see why manufacturers do not make these smoke detectors as sensitive as the standard110 volt / battery back up kind you have already. These are to supplement your existing smoke alarms...not replace them. What Are Heat Detectors?Heat detectors are low voltage devices that also may be added to your existing security system.Imagine a little device that has a built in thermostat that is preprogrammed so that when the temperature rises to this pre-set level from a fire...the alarm will sound and the fire department will be dispatched. I personally recommend using a combination heat / smoke detectors so that you have the best of both worlds. Well that raises an interesting question...
