So you've had a break in.
But at least they're gone now...right?
After all...you've installed your new security system...
You've put into practice some of the suggestions from this website and
now you can relax...
Don't count on it .
Unfortunately it could just be the beginning of your problems because
of identity theft.
Besides your Tv, DVD player & computer...Your identity
may have been stolen too.
Why
Is Identity Theft Become So Rampant?
Each and every day
you hear on the news about people having their identity
stolen. There are several simple reasons way this is
happening.
#1 - This year was a banner holiday season for purchasing online.
Buying things online is becoming the norm.
#2- More and more people are paying their bills on line.
#3 - Many businesses use social security numbers for employee &
customer identity numbers
#4- They are soliciting us and bombarding us for new credit card offers
in the mail daily
All it takes is a clever...or not so clever thief to get our social
security number or credit card info to go on a shopping spree frenzy
So what are some
practical ways we can protect ourselves from unnecessarily losing our
identity to identity thieves?
1. Do not store your credit card numbers or passwords on your computer.
(Computers are often stolen during a break in robbery. Plus you would
be surprised how they can get into your computer over the
internet).
2. Use a firewall to protect yourself from uninvited guests
from getting into your computer
3. Invest in a shredder to shred all of your sensitive paperwork that
may have your name, address, social security number & account
information. This includes junk mail for credit card offers! (Did you
know that thieves will often go thru your garbage to find such
information)
4. Do not give your social security number out to be used as an
identity number. If they insist...just give them the last 4 digits.
5. Did you know that all an dishonest person has to do is have your
checking account & routing number & they can write as
many checks ...or print as many checks as they like. You have more
protection by using a credit card than using checks.
6- Use common sense at A.T.M's. Don't be afraid to tell people to "back
off".
7. Write on your credit cards, "Must see photo ID" . Be sure to thank
your cashier when they remember to check it & don't be bashful
about asking those who did not!
8. Invest in a fire safe...or safe deposit box to keep all of
your important info incase their is ever a burglary break in.
9. Use the internet to read up on the latest phishing schemes &
scams so you can protect yourself & secure your credit
& identity.
